The Regenerative Lens: A conceptual framework for regenerative social-ecological systems

Buckton et al. present a concept for considering regenerative systems: the "regenerative lens". According to this view, regenerative systems should maintain cycles of well-being within and outside themselves, especially between humans and nature, so that "life begets life". Five key qualities are needed to best promote such regenerative dynamics.

These key qualities are necessary for the promotion of regenerative dynamics:

  1. Ecological worldviewAn understanding that people are part of a complex network of life, rather than being separate from it. This promotes sustainable interactions with the environment.
  2. MutualismInteractions that are beneficial for everyone involved, both between individuals and in networks. This strengthens the overall health of the system.
  3. DiversityA high degree of biological, cultural and organisational diversity increases the resilience and adaptability of systems.
  4. Capacity to actPeople and non-human actors need freedom and resources to be able to act regeneratively. This includes control over their own livelihoods and the ability to pursue collective regenerative goals.
  5. ReflexivityContinuous reassessment of underlying values and assumptions to ensure that actions remain regenerative. This requires in-depth reflection and adaptation to changing conditions.

The "Regenerative Lens" represents a radical departure from traditional approaches to sustainability and offers a clear and ambitious way to promote regenerative systems. Companies that adopt this approach can not only contribute to solving global environmental and social challenges, but also strengthen their own innovative capacity and competitiveness. Implementing this framework requires a deep understanding of the interdependencies between humans and nature as well as a willingness to continuously reflect and adapt.
