Righetti and Rizos published an analysis of the risks in the supply of raw materials and discuss strategies to minimise these risks. As dependence on a limited number of supplier countries, especially China, is increasing, the EU should increase its own raw material production and at the same time utilise international cooperation and trade strategies to improve security of supply.
Although the EU has the potential to increase its own production of critical raw materials (CRMs), it faces significant challenges such as long approval processes, public rejection and a shortage of skilled labour. However, instead of increasing production capacities, there are alternative strategies such as substituting materials and improving resource efficiency as short-term solutions. In the long term, the EU should strengthen international partnerships and possibly create strategic reserves for critical raw materials in order to protect itself against supply shocks.
If you are interested in securing raw material supplies and risk mitigation strategies in the context of the circular economy, this document offers comprehensive insights and recommendations for action.
