Metric for recording the degree of digitalisation in manufacturing companies

Digitalisation is no longer a new trend - but it still poses challenges for companies. In order to support the digital transformation in Austria, Schneider et al. present options for recording and evaluating the current degree of digitalisation of companies in order to make Industry 4.0 measurable and to be able to take targeted measures.

The study identifies and analyses existing maturity models and company indices as well as relevant funding programmes for digitalisation in order to develop a comprehensive model. This model structures digitalisation into five main categories: IT equipment and security, processes and interfaces, data and technologies, services and customers, and organisation and strategy. Each main category is further subdivided into subcategories and indicators in order to capture the degree of digitalisation in detail.

A central element is IT equipment and security, which includes the technical infrastructure and the digital skills of employees. Processes and interfaces relate to the automation and networking of business processes. In the area of data and technologies, the focus is on the utilisation of data as a valuable resource and the implementation of advanced manufacturing technologies such as IoT and AI. The services and customers category focuses on digital product development, customer-centric services and digital sales channels. Organisation and strategy deals with the need for a clear digitalisation strategy and flexible organisational structures.

The maturity model developed is intended to help companies assess their level of digitalisation and plan measures for digital transformation. It provides a basis for continuous monitoring and enables economic policy to develop targeted support measures. The results of the study emphasise the importance of a holistic approach to digitalisation that integrates all areas of the company and takes into account both technological and organisational aspects.
