Scherk and Pöchhacker-Tröscher analyse international approaches and alternatives for promoting the circular economy in Austria. A study commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) seeks ways to accelerate the transformation to a resource-conserving and climate-neutral economy, particularly in view of the goal of climate neutrality by 2040.
The circular economy is emphasised as a key strategy for sustainability and climate neutrality. A planned "Circularity Lab Austria" will serve as a knowledge, service and networking platform to promote the circular economy and support the implementation of the national strategy.
The study analyses European initiatives such as the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform, Circular Flanders, Circular Economy Switzerland and the VDI Centre for Resource Efficiency. These platforms serve as models for possible Austrian initiatives. There are various models for circular economy initiatives, including central hubs, networks and information platforms. These initiatives differ in terms of their strategic orientation, target groups, activities and organisational structures.
The initiatives focus on networking, knowledge sharing, policy design, promoting innovation and raising awareness. Some platforms offer comprehensive consulting services, toolkits and funding programmes. Based on the analysis, it is recommended that Austria develops a flexible and integrative platform that involves both companies and other players in the circular economy. This should be supported by cooperation, networks and targeted funding programmes.
A well-coordinated and broad-based initiative to promote the circular economy is therefore necessary in order to promote sustainable economic activity and climate protection in Austria.
