The "10-point plan" of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ) aims to establish a circular economy in Austria that is suitable for everyday use. The plan places particular emphasis on standardising collection structures for recyclable materials, switching from bring systems to pick-up systems (i.e. collecting recyclable materials directly from households) and increasing recycling rates, particularly for plastic packaging.
Important measures include equipping public buildings with recycling bins across the board, improving waste separation at events and during leisure time, and optimising packaging design to make it more recycling-friendly. The plan emphasises the need to use and improve existing structures instead of introducing expensive parallel structures, such as a deposit system. The aim is to maximise both environmental and economic benefits while promoting public acceptance.
This holistic approach should not only enable Austria to achieve the EU recycling targets, but also make it a pioneer in the European circular economy.
