Resource utilisation in Austria 2020

The report "Resource utilisation in Austria 2020" examines resource consumption in Austria and its impact on the environment and the economy. Austria's resource consumption is over 19 tonnes per capita, well above the planetary boundaries. The high consumption of natural resources, such as fossil fuels and metals, contributes significantly to climate change and species loss.

Although resource consumption has stabilised, it remains at a high level. Austria is heavily dependent on resource imports, especially for fossil fuels and metals. Critical raw materials such as cobalt, which are essential for future technologies, are often imported from politically unstable regions, which can jeopardise security of supply.

The circular economy is highlighted here as a key approach to using resources for longer, minimising waste and reducing dependencies. In this context, the report also emphasises the close link between resource efficiency and climate protection, as a reduction in resource consumption also leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions - this synergy enables an efficient and effective solution to both problems.

The challenges of sustainable resource utilisation in various sectors, such as the construction industry and energy supply, are also discussed. Finally, the report makes recommendations on how Austria can reduce its resource consumption and at the same time support the transition to a climate-neutral economy.
