The master's thesis "Circular Business Model Innovation: A Process Framework and a Tool for Business Model Innovation in a Circular Economy" by Bas Mentink, submitted to TU Delft and Leiden University, investigates how new methods and tools for business model innovation (BMI) can be used to improve circular business models (CBM).
Bas Mentink is developing a CBMI framework that structures the innovation process in five phases: Preparation, Initiation, Ideation, Integration and Implementation. He also identifies 18 key challenges that companies face when introducing CBMs. The Business Cycle Canvas (BCC) is presented as a new tool that closes the gaps in existing methods. It visualises the business cycle and supports the integration of multi-stakeholder business models, promotes understanding of the needs of other stakeholders and supports the development of new governance structures.
The research experiments show that the use of the BCC significantly improves the quality of CBM concepts.
