Vacancies and brownfield sites

Options for action for municipalities and regions

Dealing with unused land is becoming increasingly important - not only from a spatial planning perspective, but also from an ecological, economic and social point of view. Making existing buildings and sites usable again helps to conserve resources, use infrastructure efficiently and strengthen town centres.

In the webinar on 25 June Sabine Rabl-Berger (Federal Environment Agency; brownfields dialogue) and Lukas Fürst (Joinery Melk) Insights into current developments and practical approaches in dealing with Vacancies and brownfield sites. Both basic approaches and selected examples from practice are presented, demonstrating different utilisation options and activation strategies.

In practice, the reactivation of vacant properties is often associated with challenges: complex ownership structures, a lack of utilisation prospects or economic uncertainties make implementation difficult. At the same time, it has been shown that successful solutions are primarily found where different stakeholders work together and new approaches are trialled.

The webinar provides a compact overview of current developments and highlights possible approaches for municipalities and regions. The aim is to provide orientation, visualise potential and provide impetus for sustainable and space-saving development.
