Sewage sludge is not merely a waste disposal problem; it also contains phosphorus, an essential raw material. However, new regulatory requirements are forcing local authorities and wastewater associations to make important strategic decisions: how should sewage sludge be utilised in future? What partnerships and capacities will be required? And what costs can be expected?
This webinar, organised as part of the Team Kreislaufwirtschaft project, provides a concise overview of current sewage sludge management in Austria, explains the legal requirements and uses a regional example to demonstrate how sewage treatment plant operators are working together to prepare for the changes.
The management of municipal sewage sludge is on the verge of a fundamental transformation. The new EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and the Austrian Waste Incineration Ordinance impose requirements on waste water treatment, sewage sludge treatment and the recovery of phosphorus.
This raises a number of questions for local authorities and wastewater associations: Where is sewage sludge generated, and in what quantities? How is it currently utilised in Austria? Which facilities are affected by the new requirements? What technical and organisational solutions are available available? And how can local authorities prepare in good time for investments, rising costs and Prepare for new collaboration requirements?
In the webinar, he explains Matthias Zessner-Spitzenberg The Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) assesses current sewage sludge management practices and highlights the role that phosphorus recovery could play in the future within a circular economy. Hubert Grech Published by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management, this document explains the current regulatory framework and the requirements for phosphorus recovery. Markus Callegari The Hall in Tirol–Fritzens Wastewater Association then provides an insight into the „Tyrolean solution“. The workshop report shows how several sewage treatment plant operators are working together on a future recycling route.
The aim of the event is to reduce existing uncertainties and to provide local authorities and wastewater associations with a sound basis for their next steps.
Mayors, local councillors, local authority staff, managers of wastewater associations and sewage treatment works, climate and energy model regions, KLAR! regions, regional management bodies, public institutions and other professionals with an interest in the subject.
The webinar is being organised by the Circular Economy Team – a joint project of Ressourcen Forum Austria, Circular Economy Forum Austria, Climate Alliance Austria and the Association of Climate Model Regions in Austria – in cooperation with the Austrian Water and Waste Management Association.
