Circular culture festival 2022

A festival for young and old to experience and create together. Waste becomes recyclable materials and the benefit is more important than the product. Our linear economy is giving way to thinking in cycles.

On the occasion of the New European Bauhaus Festival in Brussels, a Circular Culture Festival will take place for the first time in Vienna on 11 June 2022 (10 a.m. - 6 p.m.), focusing on the circular economy as one of the most important topics of the future.

Implementing a circular economy (in Austria) requires not only the restructuring of economic and industrial processes, but also a social transformation that demands a high degree of willingness and acceptance from citizens. The aim of the Kreislaufkultur Fest is to familiarise people with circular thinking, get them excited about the topic in a practical way and set them on the path to becoming circular citizens.

A trail, which starts in Courtyard 7 of the MuseumsQuartier Wien, leads to 10 stations, which are designed along the 10 R's (the ten rules of the circular economy beginning with "R") with contributions from the world of design. Visitors can explore topics such as "Repair", "Refuse" or "Refurbish". Interactive and participatory elements give all participants on the trail the opportunity to engage with the topic individually.

Under the auspices of the IDRV (Institute of Design Research Vienna), the stations invite visitors to participate in the design process: Precious Plastic Vienna, for example, illustrates the topic of "recycling" by allowing visitors to produce an injection-moulded part from recycled plastic on site. EOOS NEXT is installing a spherical track on the topic of "Reduce" under the title "Circulation Clock": the material flows of non-renewable and natural raw materials are abstracted into spheres and show a scenario for the next 10 years that does not involve any significant changes to our
Instead, it continues to accumulate mineral material. Or the Transitory Yarn project by Alexandra Fruhstorfer, which is dedicated to the topic of "remanufacture" of yarn in the fashion sector. The individual stations, which are organised by different actors, are accessible to visitors of all ages without much prior knowledge. A project website offers more detailed information.

The project was initiated by Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, supported by the BMK and takes place in cooperation with the Circular Economy Forum Austria and designaustria and with the kind support of the MuseumsQuartier Wien. The adaptable content of the R's stations allows the festival to be continued at other locations. In a new context and with changing actors, the Circular Culture Festival will take place as part of Vienna Design Week (16 - 25 September 2022), among others.
