The report "Industrial Symbiosis: Study and Portfolio Review of the Projects on Industrial Symbiosis" analyses 28 industrial symbiosis projects funded by the European Commission, covering 14 different industrial sectors, and introduces the concept of the "Symbiosis Readiness Level". The aim is to support Europe's transition to carbon neutrality and a circular economy.
The "Symbiosis Readiness Level" (SRL) enables the assessment of the maturity level of symbiosis projects. To facilitate industrial symbiosis, it is recommended to develop a framework in which stakeholders such as industrial park managers, municipalities and chambers of commerce play a role. In addition, the establishment of a community of practice for industrial symbiosis is proposed to develop guidelines, promote benefits and facilitate data sharing.
The results show that industrial symbiosis can contribute significantly to sustainability by reducing energy consumption and waste and creating new jobs. Close co-operation between the public and private sectors is needed to develop specific technologies and promote sustainable finance investments. The potential benefits include a 10 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions from industrial processes in Europe.
