What role does infrastructure play in a circular economy - and what needs to be done for it to contribute to a more sustainable future? Leffers et al. shed light on current challenges in the infrastructure sector and show how a more sustainable infrastructure can be created through the implementation of circular economy principles, circular design, material reuse and innovative digital technologies.
This is illustrated by examples from the Netherlands, which is regarded as a pioneer in the implementation of circular economy strategies in the infrastructure sector. These include innovative projects such as the construction of the first circular viaduct, the use of biodegradable materials and the development of business models that focus on reuse and material efficiency.
The report concludes by proposing an international action plan to strengthen cooperation across national borders in order to utilise the potential of circular infrastructure worldwide.
