In their study "Business model patterns of sustainability pioneers - Analysing cases across the smartphone life cycle", Julia Zufall et al. examine sustainability pioneers in the smartphone industry.
Seven sustainable business models were identified that address social and environmental challenges. They all have one thing in common: they are based on a circular economy model, as not only individual life cycle phases are taken into account in product planning, but all aspects - from the procurement of raw materials and the actual utilisation phase through to disposal - are considered in the design.
The pioneers are addressing sustainability problems in the smartphone industry through innovative approaches such as modular designs, sustainable procurement channels and the longest possible usage phases. However, cooperation between different players is also essential for a comprehensive sustainability transformation.
