This study examines the waste management of plastic packaging in Austria in 2013. 300,000 tonnes of plastic packaging waste were generated, consisting mainly of the polymers LDPE (46%), PET (19%) and PP (14%), the majority of which was either recycled or thermoenergetically recovered.
At the time of the study, Austria met the EU's recycling targets, but was faced with the challenge of meeting the stricter targets for the future. To achieve these targets, it was recommended to improve both the collection and sorting of plastic waste. It was also recommended that recycling targets be calculated based on the actual output of the recycling process to ensure that less material is lost and the quality of recycled products remains high.
