The Circular Economy Alliance Report 2023 presents three current megatrends that are potentially of great importance for the realisation of a circular economy: Decentralisation, Artificial Intelligence, and the understanding of basic Circular Economy theories. In addition to the trends, the report describes the problems they solve and their ecological impact.
The first megatrend, Intelligent decentralisationemphasises the need to move from centralised, large-scale systems to decentralised, locally oriented approaches. This decentralisation is enabled by modern technologies such as digital twins, 3D printing, platform technologies and artificial intelligence. Such technologies promote the resilience and flexibility of local production systems, reduce environmental impact and enable more effective utilisation of local resources.
The second megatrend, the Circunomic theorypresents a new model for the design of ESG systems (Environmental, Social, and Governance) that integrates the principles of the circular economy. The aim is not only to create economic value, but also to integrate social and ecological aspects into the value chains. Circunomic theory calls for a rethink of production and consumption patterns in order to promote a sustainable and fair economy that works at both global and local level.
The third megatrend, Artificial intelligence as a driver of the circular economyshows how AI technologies can drive the development and implementation of circular business models. For example, AI enables the design of products that are suitable for a circular economy, optimises the processes within these business models and helps to improve the infrastructures required to implement closed loops. Despite the numerous benefits of AI, however, the potential risks are also emphasised, particularly the environmental impact that can result from the high energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions of AI systems.
These three megatrends are closely interlinked and form the basis for a future-oriented, sustainable economy that meets the challenges of global transformation.
