The study "Artificial intelligence and the circular economy" is a collaboration between the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Google, with research and analysis support from McKinsey, and examines how AI can contribute to the circular economy. However, AI consumes an enormous amount of electricity and it is questionable whether the demand can be met with renewables.
In addition to identifying cross-sectoral applications of the circular economy for AI, the paper also takes a closer look at the food and electronics industries. It analyses how AI is already being used in these industries or could be used in the future to enable and accelerate the transition to a circular economy. This study lays the foundation for a deeper understanding of the topic and serves as a starting point for a more comprehensive analysis.
