The report "DPP4ALL - A Digital Product Passport for All" examines technical, legal and organisational requirements for the implementation of a Digital Product Passport (DPP) that can encompass various products, industries and stakeholders. The aim is to develop insights and research questions and to provide the BMK with recommendations for the development of a publicly funded project tender.
A DPP requires a customised infrastructure that adapts to the specific requirements of different industries and stakeholders. The infrastructure should ensure that trustworthy product and sustainability data is created, processed and presented. To this end, a multidisciplinary team was put together to investigate the technological, organisational and legal conditions for the development and implementation of a digital product passport.
General and sector-specific recommendations were developed. In general, it is recommended to clarify the institutional embedding and responsibilities of the relevant sector stakeholders and to provide methodological recommendations for the collection, documentation and processing of product data. Additional recommendations were made for specific sectors such as construction, battery life cycle management and waste management. These include ensuring the reusability of existing product information and investigating suitable techniques for permanently attaching identifiers to products.
To summarise, the report provides a comprehensive overview of the steps required to introduce a Digital Product Passport to help promote the circular economy and support sustainable business models.
