Towards an innovation-intensive Circular Economy: Integrating research, industry and policies

The report "Towards an Innovation-intensive Circular Economy" analyses the development of an innovative circular economy in Europe. In order to promote the transition to a sustainable economy through innovation, it is essential to link research, industry and politics more closely. It is important not to stop at recycling measures, but to aim for deeper, more systemic innovations.

A distinction is made between the traditional circular economy, which focuses on waste management and resource efficiency, and a new, innovation-driven circular economy. This new form integrates technological and social innovations into all sectors of the economy and promotes the extension of product lifetimes and the sharing economy.

Two integrative approaches are proposed. One of these approaches is the view that the circular economy is an "innovation system" that links different types of innovation to become effective. Secondly, the "NEXUS" approach is presented, which analyses the links between the circular economy, decarbonisation and the bioeconomy in order to exploit synergies and avoid potential conflicts.

It also addresses the improvement of data and information systems in order to be able to measure and manage progress in the circular economy in the best possible way.
