The article "Europe's Circular Economy Opportunity" examines the potential benefits of a circular economy in Europe and emphasises that the introduction of such principles could not only benefit Europe environmentally and socially, but is also economically profitable. The analysis shows that a circular economy could generate net economic growth of 1.8 billion euros by 2030.
The European economy remains highly resource-dependent and wastes significant amounts of recyclables, with three sectors in particular - mobility, food and construction - together accounting for 60 % of European household spending and 80 % of resource consumption. The study highlights that the application of circular economy principles, supported by disruptive technologies, could significantly increase resource efficiency and reduce annual costs in these sectors by up to €0.9bn by 2030.
Furthermore, it outlines that a circular economy has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 83 % by 2050, while strengthening Europe's competitiveness and resilience. Despite the expected benefits, there are significant transition costs associated with moving to a circular economy that should be considered.
