Circular economy strategy

In 2015, the "Circular Economy" action plan was launched by the European Commission to accelerate the circular economy. In cooperation with the BMSGPK, BMAW and BML, the BMK has developed a national circular economy strategy, which was adopted by the Council of Ministers on 7 December 2022.

The central The objectives of the strategy are:

  • Reduction of resource consumption
  • Domestic material consumption (DMC): maximum 14 tonnes per capita/year (2030)
  • Material footprint (MF): maximum 7 tonnes per capita/year (2050)
  • Increase resource productivity by 50 per cent (2030)
  • Increase in circularity rate to 18 per cent (2030)
  • Reduction in private household consumption by 10 per cent (2030)
  • The first progress report on the implementation of the strategy was published in July 2024.

Dhe Progress report 2024 describes the implementation status of the projects listed in the circular economy strategy based on the information available or provided by the stakeholders. In particular, the implementation activities listed in the seven transformation priorities do not claim to be exhaustive, but rather provide examples of the relevant guidelines, projects, initiatives and studies.

- The circular economy strategy has four targets for reducing resource consumption. The development of the indicators is mostly positive.

- Statistics Austria and Eurostat regularly compile figures for the monitoring of consumption-based material flows in Austria. They are important for implementing the circular economy strategy.
